Hometown Hello: The Hospitality Careers Academy

There are few things more comforting than walking into a hotel at the end of a long trip and feeling like everyone you meet is happy to see you. Creating an experience for a guest, a customer, or a client, and making them feel unequivocally welcome, is what hospitality is all about. Open to applicants from all over the state, the Hospitality Careers Academy is a week-long program for students interested in pursuing careers in the hospitality and tourism industry. With opportunities to learn about all the different aspects of planning an event – from marketing to culinary to stage production and more – this is the perfect way to get unique hands-on experience.

HCA is put on by The Classic Center in partnership with The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, and Levy to provide high school students with the opportunity to listen to guest speakers in the industry, participate in job shadowing and industry tours, and take part in team-building and leadership activities, all while working towards a culminating capstone project – The Classic Center Cultural Foundation’s Celebration of the Arts.

Olivia Espinosa-Rangel, one of last year’s HCA scholarship winners, says, “I would like to start off by saying thank you for the opportunity [HCA] gave me to learn about careers I genuinely did not know very much about. I am happy to say that I am using a lot of the skills I learned this summer at one of my current jobs.”

This year’s HCA will take place Sunday, July 19 – Thursday, July 23. The early acceptance deadline is Friday, February 14, and the regular acceptance deadline is Monday, April 13. The Academy’s $500 registration fee includes 4 nights of hotel accommodations, meals for the week, and training from industry professionals. This fee is not due until the student is accepted into the program. Apply at
