Athens Wine Weekend Blog

Imagine a relaxing weekend with your closest friends or a date night with your significant other full of gourmet dining, wine pairings, tastings of a variety of foods with a vast array of wines to sip in a wide, airy space. Where can you find all of these vibes and even more options in between, do you ask? Athens Wine Weekend, of course! From Gourmet Dinner to Amuse-Bouche to Grand Tasting to Sparkling Wine Brunch, this renowned event is perfect for any wine lover.

The clock strikes 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and you pack up your desk and leave the office, ready for a well-earned weekend of festivities. Throwing off the blazer and adding some lipstick for a quick office-to-evening look, you head straight to The Classic Center to start the weekend off right. Sliding into the conveniently attached parking deck, you walk across the patio and up the Atrium stairs to be welcomed by friendly staff escorting you into Grand Hall for the main event. Greeters wait for you to arrive and hand you an Athens Wine Weekend glass and tokens to claim food at each locally prepared station. Looking around you see Levy, The Classic Center’s in-house caterer, Nothing Bundt Cakes, with delectable desserts, International Grill and Bar, featuring food with Middle Eastern flair, The Pine Bar, a Five Points neighborhood favorite, Home.made, with classic and cozy Southern bites, and Paloma Park, an up-and-coming downtown hotspot. Delicious smells waft towards you, and it’s almost impossible to choose where to start – good thing you have a token for them all! You sample some of the best food that Athens has to offer, each appetizer paired with the perfect wine to complement it, without having to leave the building. In this manner, Friday evening drifts pleasantly away at Amuse-Bouche, the first of several Athens Wine Weekend events that you have to look forward to after a long week at work.

After a good night's rest and perhaps brunch at a local downtown Athens’ restaurant, you walk back to The Classic Center for the largest of the weekend’s events – Grand Tasting. With an extensive selection of wines from around the world, you can travel the globe in a single afternoon. If you didn’t grab a complimentary wine glass at last night’s Amuse-Bouche, you can get one now! Completely free and classic, they make the perfect addition to any at-home drinkware collection. After perusing the tables and sampling a delightful variety of wine, you head over to a seminar to expand your knowledge of the grape and learn from the best local wine educators. With such an interesting collection of topics ranging from wine and food pairings to geographically focused discourse, it was hard to choose which one to attend, so you selected several, thankful for the staggered timeslots that allowed you to easily do so. After presenting your mobile tickets from the convenience of your cellphone to the greeter, you enter a seminar room and grab a seat at a preset table. Over the course of the next 45 minutes, you laugh and learn with other wine enthusiasts and happily walk away with new knowledge to share with your friends.

After an afternoon coffee break downtown, you head back for the highlight of Athens Wine Weekend– Gourmet Dinner in The Classic Center Athena Ballroom. The first course of this South African-inspired meal is Frisée Salad, paired with the perfect wine hand-selected by Frank Sinkwich, President of Northeast Sales Distributing. It feels impossible to beat the flavor of this first round of food, but this six-course meal will feature a traditional South African Stew, Roasted Loin, and more, that will amaze the whole table. End the night with the last course dessert trio. Pair the melba pudding, milk tarte, and the koeksisters with Mullineux Straw Wine. After eating this delicious South-African inspired Gourmet Dinner, you will go home full and content and sleep soundly before the last of the weekend’s events.

Arriving back at The Classic Center one final time for the finishing touch to the perfect weekend, you grab some friends and walk into the Atrium. The room is set perfectly for a Sunday brunch, with the timeless black and white marble floors juxtaposed against the modern art hanging from the ceiling. It’s easy to see how the room was based off of New York’s famous Grand Central Station with tall ceilings, stunning arches, and a gorgeous view. You will marvel at the specialty mimosas and the heaping brunch buffet. Each of your friends grabs a different flavor of their favorite sparkling brunch cocktail, and you all raise a toast to a weekend well spent.
